How to Marry a Millionaire

A comedy about three women making a plan in New York. Schatze, Pola and Loco are friends working as models. They make a plan: rent an expensive apartment, look rich and marry a wealthy man. The rent is far beyond them and they get by selling the furniture piece by piece. The plan goes wrong for all three. Schatze targets a rich man while the one she is interested in is someone else. Pola refuses to wear her glasses and keeps ending up in the wrong place. Loco finds herself at a mountain lodge on a trip she took for a weekend break. The humour comes from the film mocking the plan itself: all three are calculating and none can stay faithful to the calculation. It was made as one of the first films in the widescreen format and was presented on that basis. Marilyn Monroe plays Pola, Lauren Bacall plays Schatze and Betty Grable plays Loco. Jean Negulesco directed. An enjoyable production for anyone who likes classical Hollywood comedy and 1950s studio cinema. For a viewer expecting a modern perspective, the goal the narrative sets belongs to its period and some jokes have dated.
