What Three Came Home Is About
The American writer Agnes Newton Keith is living in North Borneo with her husband, a British colonial officer, when the Japanese occupation begins and the family is split in two. Keith and her small son are sent to the women's camp, her husband to the men's. The years that follow become a matter of hunger, illness and getting to the next day. The film's most striking figure is the camp commandant, Colonel Suga. He speaks English, has read the book Keith wrote about Borneo and asks her to sign it: a man shown both as part of the system running the camps and as someone thinking separately from it. Adapting Keith's 1947 memoir, Jean Negulesco manufactures no heroism; the woman Claudette Colbert plays is trying to survive, and that is the whole of it. Sessue Hayakawa plays Suga.
