What Hush! Is About

For a year the director films the same street through the window of his flat in Petersburg. With the city’s three hundredth anniversary approaching, the street is dug up again and again, tarmac is poured, it is opened again the following week; workmen come and go, there are quarrels, snow falls, one hole stays open for months. Because the camera never moves, the only thing that changes is the street itself, and this repetition, funny at first, turns after a while into a picture of a country. There is almost no speech in Viktor Kossakovsky’s eighty two minute Russian documentary; it was completed in 2003.
