What Hut in the Woods Is About
Martin, who was once in a psychiatric ward, wants to put distance between himself and the city. He meets Victor, a small boy left without family, and the two of them withdraw to the woods and build their own hut. The daily effort of staying alive makes a strong bond between them. Then the hut is destroyed, the boy is taken away, and Martin finds himself in front of the authorities again. There he is told that the boy existed only in his own head. He refuses to accept that and sets out to prove Victor is real. Hans Weingartner's film neither hands down a diagnosis nor stages a display of strangeness; it describes the distance between Martin and the world without mocking him for it. The subject is as much about whose word gets believed as about escaping the city.
