I Am a Hero

A thirty-five year old manga assistant whose career has gone nowhere finds himself, when the outbreak begins, holding a shotgun and a licence. Being almost the only person in Japan legally armed puts him somewhere he does not want to be. The film rethinks the zombie genre through Japanese firearms law, and that is its most original quality. The character is no hero; he freezes at every critical moment and the film does not correct him. Shinsuke Sato directed, adapting Kengo Hanazawa's manga, with some sequences shot in Korea. A real warning: it is extremely bloody and the effects are deliberately excessive. The shopping centre sequence counts among the harshest in the genre.
