What I Am Comic Is About
The documentary gets behind the scenes of the working stand-up’s world and puts candid interviews alongside it, and what emerges is a group portrait of the people who do this that is funny and strange at once. The spine of it is Ritch Shydner, a retired comic trying to get back on stage after thirteen years away. In the eighties Shydner had HBO specials, shot five television pilots and appeared on all the late-night shows, and the big break never came. Armed with the collected wisdom of more than eighty of his peers, he tries again. Jordan Brady’s film premiered at Slamdance in 2010 and aired on Showtime on 11 June that year.
