Marley (2012): Plot, Cast & Where to Watch

Name: Marley
Genre: Music, Documentary
Released: 2012
Duration: 144 min
Cast: Bob Marley, Rita Marley, Ziggy Marley, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff

What Marley Is About

The documentary tries to explain Bob Marley through where he came from rather than through the songs: the village in Jamaica, a complicated family history, making music in the middle of political violence. Kevin Macdonald sets archive material beside conversations with people who knew him, and in several places two people remember the same event differently and the film leaves the discrepancy standing. At over two and a half hours it is heavy going as an introduction. Its strongest passage is on what the songs actually meant inside Jamaican politics, where music is the event rather than the backdrop.
