I Am Dina

Northern Norway in the 1860s. As a small child Dina causes her mother's death in an accident with boiling lye. Broken by it, her father refuses to raise her, and she grows up among the servants, wild and impossible to manage, with the stable boy Tomas as her only friend. She begins summoning her mother's ghost, and carries in her both a strange appetite for death and a fierce appetite for living. Ole Bornedal adapted Herbjørg Wassmo's 1989 novel Dina's Book. Maria Bonnevie plays Dina and won Norway's Amanda award for it. With a budget of around sixteen million dollars it was, at the time, the most expensive film ever made in Scandinavia.
