I Am Steve McQueen

The documentary follows Steve McQueen's life from a childhood that included a reform school through to his death. His move from the merchant marine into acting, the fame that arrived in the sixties, his involvement in motorcycle and car racing, the stunts he performed himself and the fight he put up to make Le Mans are taken in turn. Archive footage, family photographs and the accounts of people who worked with him are brought together. Robert Downey Jr narrates. The film was made with the participation of the family and the close circle, which brings it near to a tribute: McQueen's difficult character, the trouble in his relationships and the tensions on set are passed over. Against that, the racing sections and the accounts of how Le Mans was shot are substantial. Pierce Brosnan and Bruce Brown are among those speaking. Rather than offering new information, the film shows how the McQueen image was assembled.
