In 1925 Mussolini sent Cesare Mori to Sicily as prefect of Palermo and told him to finish the Mafia. Mori was hard, honest and unbuyable, and the powers he was given had no limits. Units moving from town to town, mass arrests, families taken hostage, property seized: by 1929 more than eleven thousand people had been arrested. Then Mori began pulling at the threads connecting the Mafia to the regime's own men, and he was removed. Pasquale Squitieri's film does not tidy that away: the blow to the Mafia was real, and so was the fact that it was struck by a dictatorship that had suspended the law in order to strike it. Giuliano Gemma plays Mori, with Claudia Cardinale in the cast.
