I Am What I Am

Shinya Tamada's 2022 Japanese film follows Kasumi, who feels no romantic attraction. When her sister marries, her mother arranges a formal matchmaking meeting without telling her, and the man she meets there is in fact only looking for a friend. The point is that this is not treated as a lack. Kasumi owes no one a proof, but the people around her keep waiting for an explanation; the narrative shows that pressure not through large scenes but through small repeated questions. Toko Miura leads and plays almost entirely in reaction. The tone is calm, the humour measured, and the narrative refuses to close by forming a couple. The original title refers to freckles. Who it's for: those who like quiet Japanese drama and narratives outside the usual romantic pattern. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a romantic close; the film deliberately withholds it.
