Lida, who lives in the village, has long been in love with Sergei, a strong man everyone admires, but he marries someone else. After an accident at work breaks his spine, Sergei is confined to bed; his wife cannot carry that life and leaves, and he shuts himself off completely, at one point saying he does not want to live.
