I Love Melvin

Melvin, a young photographer trying to make it at Look magazine, bumps into an actress named Judy in the park. They talk, and he offers to shoot a photo spread of her. The trouble is that his boss has no intention of printing it. Judy's father, meanwhile, would rather she married a dull but dependable man. As a last resort Melvin promises to get her picture on the cover. Directed by Don Weis, this MGM musical put Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds back together right after Singin' in the Rain. The dance numbers are better than the film and both of them seem to know it, particularly O'Connor's routine on roller skates and the fantasy sequence in which Reynolds is dressed as a football. The story is thin, the tempo high, and the seventy-seven minutes go by fast.
