What I Need That Record! Is About
The documentary looks into why more than three thousand independent record shops closed across the United States within a decade. There is no single reason: the pricing of the big chains, the distribution arrangements of the labels, file sharing on the internet, rents, and the changing habits of listening itself. The film talks to shop owners, to musicians and to people who take a wider view of the question, Noam Chomsky among them. The question ends up in one place: will these shops die, or will they survive? The account names no single culprit; it says that behind every shop that closed there was more than one reason, and that the reasons piled on top of each other. Brendan Toller’s seventy seven minute American documentary was completed in 2008.
