What I Work at the Cemetery Is About
Oleksii Taranenko's 2022 Ukrainian film follows Sasha, who runs a business installing headstones at a cemetery in Kyiv. He meets grief all day long and protects himself from it with cynicism, meeting every customer's pain with the same cold jokes. Underneath that manner is something from his own past he never talks about. The appearance of his fourteen-year-old daughter one day upsets the balance. The film is about a man who has made a job out of living beside death finding a reason again, and it never drops its dark humour. Vitalii Salii leads. It is adapted from a novel.
