Andrzej Leszczyc spends his last day before being called up for military service: he packs his things, runs into people he used to know, closes out a university registration. The whole film fits inside that one day. It is not interested in conscription. It is interested in giving up choosing: the hero stopped building his own life some time ago and is now waiting. What keeps the film fresh more than fifty years on is that this indifference is never explained. The form is built from long takes and a wandering camera, with scenes linked by mood rather than logic. How it was made is a story in itself. Jerzy Skolimowski planned his student exercises at the Łódź Film School in advance so that they could later be cut together, and walked out of the school with a finished feature. He also plays the lead; Andrzej Leszczyc became his alter ego and returned in Walkover and Hands Up!. Elżbieta Czyżewska and Tadeusz Minc appear. Who it is for: viewers who like the Polish New Wave, low-budget first features and the indifferent heroes of the sixties. Who it is not for: anyone looking for plot. The film is built on a day in which almost nothing happens, and it makes no attempt to hide that.
