What On the Way to School Is About
The 2008 documentary by Orhan Eskiköy and Özgür Doğan follows a year in the life of Emre, a teacher posted from the west of the country to the village of Demirci in the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa. The teacher does not speak Kurdish, the children do not speak Turkish, and across the school year both sides try to reach each other. The method is non-interventionist: no commentary, no interviews, only the classroom, the yard and the village. That makes the question visible as daily life rather than as a thesis, and this is where its force comes from; nobody is blamed, everyone sits inside their own impossibility. It became one of the most cited Turkish documentaries in the debate on mother-tongue education. It took the first-film award at the Golden Orange festival. Who it's for: viewers interested in Turkish documentary and in questions of language and education. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a stated thesis and a solution, or who will find observational documentary slow.
