What To Be and to Have Is About

A one-class school in a village of two hundred people in the Auvergne. Children of four and children of twelve share the same room and the same teacher. Nicolas Philibert stayed there for a school year and intervened in almost nothing: letters, a fight, snow, homework, troubles at home, the last day. Monsieur Lopez is neither an authoritarian nor a hero, only patient. The title comes from the two French auxiliary verbs, to be and to have, which is what the children learn first.
