On the Adamant

The Adamant is a wooden boat moored on the Seine in Paris. Inside is a day centre for psychiatric care; adults with serious mental illness come there, join the workshops, sell coffee, paint, make music, and leave when they want to. The documentary records a period aboard. Nicolas Philibert directs. The method is observation. There is no narrator, no explanation, no expert opinion. The camera stands beside the patients and gives room to what they say; who is a patient and who is staff is left deliberately unclear for the first half hour. The institution itself is the real subject. The Adamant is one of the few open models still standing while France argues about the shrinking of psychiatric services and the number of beds closed; the film does not state that as a thesis but shows it. The strongest passages are people describing their own condition. A man talks about his delusions, a woman about her childhood, another about what the medication does; none of it is corrected and none of it is interpreted. Philibert was known for the documentary Être et avoir, and the same method is here. It won the Golden Bear at the 2023 Berlin film festival.
