What In the Land of the Deaf Is About
The documentary goes into the world of deaf people. Everyone in the film is profoundly deaf. They express themselves in sign language. That language developed over many years. It is as fine and as precise as speech. A declaration of love can be made in it, and so can a technical description. Jean-Claude teaches sign language. His class has both children and adults in it. The camera goes into the lessons and into daily life. Deaf children at school are filmed as well. Families and teachers speak too. Sight and touch carry a different weight in this world. Nicolas Philibert directed the ninety nine minute documentary, in which Jean-Claude Poulain stands out. The French, Italian, Swiss and British coproduction was finished in 1992.
