What Il Buco Is About
In 1961, while skyscrapers were going up in the Italian north, a group of young cavers arrived in Calabria and descended to the bottom of the Bifurto Abyss, measuring what was then the deepest known cave in Europe at close to seven hundred metres. The villagers take little interest and an old shepherd watches from a distance. Michelangelo Frammartino sets two descents beside each other: the team going into the cave and a man going towards the end of his life. There is almost no dialogue and no music; the sound is the mountain itself. It won a special jury prize at Venice.
