What The Four Times Is About
There is almost no speech in it. In Calabria, in an old village most people have left, an elderly shepherd is living out his last days. He is ill, and mixes dust collected from the church floor into his water and drinks it, believing it will cure him. Then the film leaves him for a goat kid, then for a great fir tree, then for the charcoal that tree becomes. Four lives, four states. The structure rests on the Pythagorean idea of the soul passing through four conditions; Pythagoras himself lived in Calabria. Michelangelo Frammartino directed. Not for anyone after a plot, but for anyone who likes to look.
