In Caulonia, a half-emptied village in Calabria, an elderly farmer’s days run to the same rhythm until a mobile phone he finds interrupts it. A quiet attachment forms between him and a young woman who does odd jobs around the village and whom the older women keep an eye on. The space between the two of them fills up with waiting and with decline. Michelangelo Frammartino made his first film for five thousand euros, with non-professionals, in the town his own family came from, and the farmer is played by his grandfather, Angelo Frammartino. Caulonia had counted more than fifteen thousand residents in the 1950s and was down to a few hundred by the early 2000s. It premiered at the 56th Locarno Film Festival in 2003.
