An English writer and a French antiques dealer spend a day together in Tuscany. At one point a café owner takes them for a married couple, they play along, and from then the film refuses to say which version is true: did they just meet, or have they been married fifteen years. It is Abbas Kiarostami's first film made outside Iran. Juliette Binoche won Best Actress at Cannes in 2010. William Shimell opposite her is a baritone opera singer acting in a film for the first time. Kiarostami met him during an opera production and was drawn to the strength, finesse and humour of the character he brought. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 89 percent and Metacritic at 82. A BBC critics' poll named it the 46th greatest film since 2000, and Rolling Stone placed it 91st on its hundred best films of the 21st century. It was automatically banned in Iran because it was made abroad and because of Binoche's clothing. Who it is for: viewers who treat ambiguity as form rather than fault. Who it is not for: anyone who needs an answer. The film does not give one and signals early that it will not.
