What Il gaucho Is About
An Italian film producer travels to a festival in Buenos Aires with part of his crew. The idea is to sell the picture, pick up a prize and enjoy themselves. What they run into in Argentina is something else: Italians who emigrated years ago, kept postponing the return, and now have nothing left of home but the missing of it. Dino Risi's 1964 film opens as a festival comedy and turns into something about emigration, in the way Italian comedy of the period hid its pain inside the laughs. Vittorio Gassman plays his usual confident, faintly shameless type, with Nino Manfredi and Amedeo Nazzari alongside him.
