What The Thursday Is About
Dino, separated from his wife, is to spend a single day with his son Robertino after five years apart. He has made nothing of his life, so to win the boy's affection he invents a brilliant past for himself: a false job, a borrowed car, a whole false life. As the day goes on the lies come apart, and precisely there something real forms between father and son, and he finally tells the truth about who he is. Dino Risi's 1964 film comes from the bitter strand of Italian comedy: a portrait of a father compressed into one day.
