What Il successo Is About
This 1963 comedy is generally treated as an unofficial sequel to Il Sorpasso: Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant return under new names with much the same chemistry. Giulio has a loyal wife and a real friend, and believes anyway that money is the only thing that produces happiness, so he throws himself into a land speculation in Sardinia that he cannot possibly finance. Raising the money costs him his friends, his marriage and finally his self-respect, in that order. The credited director is Mauro Morassi, who died at forty-one having made very little, and how much of the picture belongs to Dino Risi has never been settled. Ennio Morricone wrote the score, and Alessandro D’Eva shot it in black and white.
