What In the Name of the Pope King Is About
1867, the last days of the Papal States. As Garibaldi's forces close on Rome, Monsignor Colombo da Priverno, a worn out judge on the papal court, wants to resign, sickened by the violence the papacy uses to hold on to temporal power. The case that lands in front of him will not let him go. Luigi Magni built the film on real events: after a bomb was placed beneath the Palazzo Serristori in 1867, Giuseppe Monti and Gaetano Tognetti were guillotined, in what proved to be the last death sentence handed down by papal authority.
