What Goodnight, Ladies and Gentlemen Is About
The film imitates a single day of one television channel's output: news, quiz shows, advertisements, discussion programmes. Each segment goes after a wound in seventies Italy, taking in politics, the church, the courts, the army and television itself. Our record lists a single director but this was collective work, with five of the period's major directors shooting separate parts. The cast is assembled the same way, putting Gassman, Mastroianni, Manfredi and more into one film. The humour is harsh and bleak because the period was, and it stands among the most poisonous Italian satires.
