What Somewhere Beyond Love Is About
Two workers in a Milan factory: a northern man and a woman who came up from Sicily. He pursues her; she is caught between the freedom of the north and everything she was raised to be, and the relationship builds slowly, against resistance on her side. Comencini shoots it not as a love story but as two worlds colliding. And that is not really the subject anyway. The air in the factory, what production does to the people doing it, and a system in which nobody accepts responsibility are already inside these two lives before the film begins. Giuliano Gemma and Stefania Sandrelli play them, in one of the most direct looks Italian cinema of 1974 took at working life.
