What Traffic Jam Is About
A jam on the Rome ring road stops growing only because there is nowhere left for it to grow, and the people sitting in the cars are not going anywhere for a very long time. Luigi Comencini walks the stalled lanes and opens up one vehicle after another, using the queue as a cross section of Italian society and watching its manners come apart under pressure, from ordinary patience into hysteria and then into something considerably worse. The cast is enormous: Alberto Sordi, Annie Girardot, Fernando Rey, Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Stefania Sandrelli and Gérard Depardieu among them.
