Inside Moves

Rory's suicide attempt fails and leaves him permanently disabled. He starts spending his time in a neighbourhood bar whose regulars are all living with impairments and losses of their own. Then Jerry, the bartender, is suddenly signed by a professional basketball team, and everyone in the bar holds on to that success. The further Jerry rises, the harder he finds it to remember what he left behind. Richard Donner draws the disabled characters as neither heroes nor objects of pity; he simply lets them talk like people. Diana Scarwid was nominated for an Academy Award for it, and David Morse appeared on screen here for the first time. It went largely undiscussed in the early eighties and found its place later.
