At the end of 1938 the British government made a decision: Jewish children from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia would be admitted to the country without visas. Their families were not allowed to come. In the nine months before the war began, around ten thousand children were put on trains and sent to people they did not know. Most never saw their parents again. The documentary tells these children's story in their own words. The film, directed by Mark Jonathan Harris, gives voice not only to the children who got out but to the people who organised that transport and the families who took them in in Britain. Judi Dench narrates. It won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2001. A hundred and twenty-two minutes. The documentary's hardest question is left open: what is it to separate a child from their family in order to save them, and by what measure do you weigh that?
