What The Long Way Home Is About
The documentary is about the situation of Jewish refugees after the Second World War. Most of the people who came out of the camps had no home left to return to, and for years after the war ended they waited in temporary camps. The film tells that waiting, the political argument of those years and the process leading to the founding of the state of Israel through archive footage and testimony. The point of view of the account is on the side of the refugees; it gives what happened in the words of the survivors themselves. Well known actors take part in the narration. The documentary tells liberation not as an ending but as the start of a long wait. The account also shows that in those years the decisions about who could go where were made by other people. Mark Jonathan Harris’s hundred and twenty minute American documentary was completed in 1997.
