What Into the Darkness Is About
Karl built his own large electronics factory and owns it. He lives well with his wife and five children on Strandvejen, north of Copenhagen. In April 1940 the Germans occupy Denmark. Karl tries to keep the factory running, and to protect his family and his workers he begins, reluctantly, to produce for the German market. That decision draws him into a compromised collaboration with the occupying power and opens breaks in the family that will not close. Anders Refn directs, with Jesper Christensen as Karl. It runs two and a half hours. It shows how far each person in an occupied country accommodated the occupier, and it shows it through the children as well.
