What Out of the Darkness Is About
Anders Refn's 2022 Danish film continues the story of the earlier picture about the occupation years. It follows the wealthy Skov family from the spring of 1943 to the summer of 1945, when Denmark becomes free again. In that period the official policy of cooperation with the occupier comes to an end and the resistance gains ground; the family splits between the two. The film does not tell Denmark's war story in one direction only: who resisted is in it, and so is who collaborated and who waited and said nothing. As the occupation hardens, the consequences reach the family directly. Jesper Christensen and Bodil Jørgensen play the parents and Mads Reuther the son who cannot decide.
