Irreplaceable You

A film set in New York. Abbie and Sam have been together since childhood. They become engaged and go to a doctor thinking they are expecting a child. The result is different: Abbie is ill and the treatment options are limited. Abbie takes the news in her own way. Instead of crying she makes a plan: to find Sam a new partner. She does not want him left alone after her and treats it as a duty. She searches online, arranges meetings and eliminates candidates. Sam knows nothing about the plan. The second line is the support group at the hospital. There is a bad-tempered old woman in it, a young patient and a few others; Abbie does not want to join at first and grows close to them in time. What the film is interested in is not illness but control: Abbie tries to manage the situation by arranging everything, and the one thing she cannot arrange is her own anger. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Abbie and Michiel Huisman plays Sam. Christopher Walken, Kate McKinnon, Steve Coogan and Jacki Weaver are in the cast. Stephanie Laing directed.
