Is It Easy to Be Young?

The documentary is about a generation. Its subject is young people growing up in Latvia. The time is the years of Soviet rule. The young are not at ease with that order. The film records how they are and what they say. Music takes up room inside the account. The distance between a generation and the state is the film’s matter. The account is put together as a portrait. The young people speak in their own words. Concerts and scenes from the street are inside the film. The work found a wide echo at the time. The documentary records the tension between the young and the order around them. Juris Podnieks’s Soviet documentary of 1986 runs eighty three minutes.
