Maya, who runs a small restaurant in Kalimpong, kills her ex-husband with her daughter's help when he turns up at the door after years. Her neighbour Naren is a quiet mathematics teacher who has loved her without return for years, and when he realises what has happened he does something far more elaborate than hide a body: he builds a false puzzle for the police to solve. Sujoy Ghosh adapted Keigo Higashino's The Devotion of Suspect X and moved the story from Japan to the hills of West Bengal. The tension is not who killed the man but how far Naren's plan extends. Jaideep Ahlawat plays Naren almost without changing his tone of voice and carries the whole film. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Vijay Varma hold the other two corners. Who it is for: viewers who like cold-blooded crime adaptations and hill-town atmosphere. Who it is not for: readers of the novel, who already hold the surprise.
