Johan

There is a farm in the Swedish interior. An older farmer lives there with his young wife. The community around them is closed and traditional. One day a stranger comes to the village. Nobody knows who he is. Something forms between him and the woman. In the end she goes away with him. They leave in a small boat. The route runs through dangerous rapids. The story comes from a 1911 novel by Juhani Aho. The hardest parts of the film were shot on the Kalix river, using the Kamlunge rapids there. Jenny Hasselqvist was the first woman to make that run. Parts of the film are lost today. Jenny Hasselqvist, Mathias Taube and Urho Somersalmi appear in the hundred and ten minute silent film, a Swedish production Mauritz Stiller finished in 1921.
