What The Saga of Gösta Berling Is About

Gösta Berling is a young, handsome and ungovernable minister who loses his cassock over his drinking and the things he says from the pulpit. He takes work at a great house as tutor to the stepdaughter of Countess Marta, and the two of them fall in love. The countess has plans of her own. It is a long, chaptered silent epic out of Selma Lagerlöf's 1891 novel. Mauritz Stiller's 1924 film is one of the last great works of the Swedish silent era. Its lasting importance sits with the young actress nobody had noticed before: Greta Garbo. Not long after it opened, both Garbo and Stiller were called to Hollywood, and Swedish cinema lost a generation to America.
