What Johnny Come Lately Is About
A drifting newspaperman walks into town and is about to be booked for vagrancy when the elderly woman who owns a failing paper takes him in. She is close to losing it and is fighting the political ring that runs the town on her own, and together they set about reviving the paper and printing what the ring has been doing. It was the first film from the production company James Cagney set up with his brother William, formed right after his Oscar for Yankee Doodle Dandy. John Van Druten wrote the screenplay from Louis Bromfield’s 1938 novel McLeod’s Folly. Cagney kept a particular affection for it and, at a retrospective the year before he died, named it among the five happiest jobs of his career.
