Evelyn Prentice

The criminal lawyer John Prentice has let his work get ahead of his life. The more his wife Evelyn is left alone, the more open she becomes to another man's attention. When that brief closeness ends, the man starts blackmailing her with letters he has got hold of. Evelyn cannot tell her husband, because she knows what telling him would cost. Then one night a gun goes off in that man's apartment. William K. Howard's seventy nine minute MGM picture brings William Powell and Myrna Loy back together right after The Thin Man; but there is no comedy this time, there is a courtroom. Rosalind Russell makes her screen debut here. The film falls in the period when the Hays Code began to be enforced in earnest, and it moves back and forth between punishing the woman's mistake and understanding it.
