What The Princess Comes Across Is About
In William K. Howard’s 1936 film, Carole Lombard plays Wanda Nash, an aspiring actress travelling as Princess Olga of Denmark in order to land a Hollywood contract; the impersonation is aimed squarely at Greta Garbo, voice and cool distance included. On board is a blackmailer who knows exactly who she is not, and several other passengers with things to hide. Also aboard is an escaped killer travelling under a false name, who starts killing again to cover his tracks, while detectives from five countries wander the decks. When suspicion settles on the princess and the bandleader she has inconveniently fallen for, the two have to find the murderer themselves. Fred MacMurray plays the bandleader.
