What Joker Is About

A villager named Mannar Mannan declares himself president of the country and takes on, single-handedly, every injustice he comes across. Everyone treats him as a madman, though what he is really doing is taking a non-functioning state at its own word. At the centre of the story is his effort to get a toilet built at his house: he applies to the government incentive scheme, is cheated along with his neighbours and ends up with nothing but a basin. Raju Murugan wrote and directed it as black comedy and political satire without hiding how painful it gets. Guru Somasundaram’s performance holds the balance of the whole film. Released in August 2016, it was named best Tamil film at the 64th National Film Awards.
