What Jour de Fête Is About

A fair arrives in a small French village and the local postman, impressed by a newsreel he has seen, decides to deliver the mail at American speed. This was Jacques Tati's first feature and the whole method of the later films is already here: almost no dialogue, comedy built from bodies and objects, a camera that stands back and watches. The bicycle sequence continues the silent tradition directly. It mocks modernisation without romanticising the village. It was shot for colour that technology could not yet deliver.
