What Monsieur Hulot's Holiday Is About
A man arrives for the summer at a small seaside hotel. Doing nothing in particular, he disrupts everyone's arrangements. The film has no plot, and that is method rather than lack. Jacques Tati places his jokes at the back of the frame: the sound of a door, a chair shifting, a small tennis stroke. The dialogue is reduced almost entirely to noise, because what is said is not the point. Tati directed and starred. The Hulot character appears here for the first time and continued through his later films. Who it's for: those who like visual comedy and narrative without incident. Who it's not for: viewers who want a story to follow; the film shows a holiday passing, and nothing else.
