Madhumita's 2019 Tamil film follows Karuppudurai, eighty years old. His children decide to leave him to die so as to claim their inheritance, and hearing this, he runs from the house. On the road he meets a boy of eight. Together they draw up a list of things the old man has never done; the narrative keeps the journey cheerful without letting the practice behind it be forgotten. The cast are unknown and the boy's role comes forward. The tone is warm and the close emotional. Who it's for: those who like Tamil independent cinema and road films. Who it's not for: viewers for whom the abandonment of the elderly would be difficult; the film addresses it directly.
