Kaanekkaane

Manu Ashokan's 2021 Malayalam film follows Paul, who has lost his daughter. His son-in-law Allen has remarried and is raising his grandson; when Paul visits, his doubts about how his daughter died grow. The film does not build its mystery as a detective story. The viewer learns the truth early; the tension comes from who knows what and how the guilt is carried. Tovino Thomas and Aishwarya Lekshmi lead, with Suraj Venjaramoodu as the father. The narrative lets its silences run and uses music sparingly. The close does not leave the punishment to a court. Who it's for: those who like quiet Malayalam thrillers and narratives of moral dilemma. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a driven investigation; the film keeps its progress deliberately slow.
