Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Sunil comes from a middle-class family and is determined to get somewhere with his band. His father disapproves. He is in love with Anna, the group's singer, who sees him as a friend. Rather than accept that, he intervenes, arranges, tries to bend it his way. The film leaves him inside those lies. Kundan Shah does something rare in Hindi cinema: his hero is a loser. Sunil is neither a handsome rescuer nor a lover who will be proved right. Shah shoots this with tenderness instead of cruelty, so the film works as comedy and as a small story of defeat at once. At the 39th Filmfare Awards it won Best Film and Best Actor from the critics, and Shah Rukh Khan took Best Actor at the same ceremony for Baazigar. Khan has said this is his own favourite of his films. Who it's for: Viewers who like 1990s Hindi cinema and character comedy that steps outside the mainstream. Who it's not for: What Sunil does is hard to excuse from here and the film is very forgiving of him. Anyone waiting for the standard romantic resolution will not get it.
